Before going to Auroville we had booked our rooms by calling them up. The link for the guest houses is http://www.aurovilleguesthouses.org/gs-home.php .
On the right hand side of this page click the quick link drop-down menu. You can find a list of their gust houses. Click anyone and you can see the pictures of that guest house as well some details on them including their contact no.
We had stayed in Center guest house which is inside Bharat Nivas. We had directly called on the given no on that page and booked our room. The rooms and bathrooms were very neat and clean with adequate furniture. There was a safe-lock box with key in the room also. They serve complimentary breakfast which was organic bread and fruits with homemade butter and jam to go with it. The room tariff was Rs600. They also serve tea. They have a cold water system and if you have bottles, you can fill them up. They did not serve lunch but served dinner on request for additional Rs40 per head. The best thing about this guest house is, it is centrally located and getting there is not so difficult but if you want to stay on some other property then getting there without a map is very very difficult.
The best way to travel inside Auroville is by getting a map which is available at visitors' center for Rs 15. If you want to visit inside Matri Mandir then you have to book at least 4-5 days in advance which can be done over phone also. The food at the visitors' center was very good and we mostly ate the European food. It is awesome. One can rent bikes at the information center to travel around. Inside Auroville at certain points where 2-3 roads meet, they have a security guard who can guide you but they leave in the evening. So it is better not to go around after sunset until you are very very sure of your way.
Once you stay in a property they will give you a guest card which you need to have with you if you are visiting other settlements in side the property and also to get inside the property after crossing visitors center. They have security at visitors center and you will not be allowed to cross that boundary if you do not have the guest card.
If you should respect their rules and behave well you will have a pleasant stay and a memorable one too.
It is a bit tricky to find the turning from ECR road to reach Auroville. Below I have posted some landmark to check to get the right direction.
We loved the place which is very peaceful. One comes so close to the nature that the experience is exhilarating.
The photo below is of a building which you will see on the left hand side of the road while going towards Pondicherry from Chennai. After you pass this building, be alert because after a few min drive there will be a small road on the right which will take you to Auroville.
You have to turn here, this is the sign board at the entrance of the road.
This is what the rod looks once you have turned right from ECR and entered the road leading to Auroville.
